It did not run no, but the valves do seem to be timed correctly, or close enough so that I can wiggle and adjust at T. I haven't had it apart or anything like that, I've just been going through the motions trying to get it to run first. It feels close right now, but I'm getting some backfire/mist fr...

That's what I thought. So switching the wires around is a waste of time :)

Is there any way to check valve timing without dropping the engine?

It turns counter-clockwise. Also indicated by arrow on timing rotor... :) Indeed I had been setting the points 90 degrees off, but still no pop. A related question: do the plugs fire simultaneously? Well I'm possibly more confused than I was before I asked the question! Kidding, I *think* I have a sense of how I should be checking the timing. But I sure would like to hear a nice loud backfire out of a muffler to confirm I'm at least on the right track.
