Go ahead and file the slots , what ever it takes. maybe the plate was off of another model. I don't see any reason that it can't be made to work.

Trivial
If you look at it you will notice that if it were lined up better the ignition timing would be more advanced then it is. Just make the point gap a little smaller.

40 mph rattle

Hard to say for sure, being as I can't hear it from here. From the description it sounds a lot like the little rattle /tinkle noise I get with mine. I believe it is caused by loose wrist pin fit. clutch pull

While you are inspecting & lubing the release threads look inside and make sure there is a 5/16 ball inside where it will push aginst the push rod. When changing cables they often fall out and make a beeline for the devils triangle, never to seen agine.
