Could plugs fouling play into there too? Or would that be more of a timing thing?

With 12 volts to the coil, you can simply lift the ground wire and it will simulate the points opening. Thanks brew,I might give that a try if I can't find a decent hose replacement. I'm more inclined to use the original air filter set up because I spent a day rebuilding the other one from a general one and some gasket sealant. I'll let you know if I find anything worthwhile.
