Thanks everyone for the replies. I too think there might be a little more space on the underside. I think I'm going to keep this seat and re-cover it anyway, it works well enough.

I've had trouble lining up the bolt screws when re-attatching the seat, and started wondering if my seat is really for my bike. thanks guys, for all the help. i was pulling my hair out on that one! stayed up til two getting the timing set and the idle nice and smooth. once i started i couldn't stop. i knew it was going to be nice today and wanted to take it for a spin around the block (first outting!)

my slide does go down, and if it's in 180 off, the slide will not drop. pic below

idle screw all the way out. slide bottoms out and retracts. cable should be routed correctly. when i bought it from p.o., it popped right off, and i haven't rerouted it.
