Thanks Stan, that proved to be the right advice. The discs were frozen together. I took it all out, cleaned and lubricated it all and it shifted correctly thereafter. it is also surprisingly easy to work on this clutch. 1964 Honda Dream CA78, Philadelphia, PA I have tightened it to the fullest, I see full range of motion in the lifter at the end of the shift linkage, but once dropped into 1st or 2nd gear... there is no disengaging the clutch with the lever... it simply stays in gear/stalls out. thanks guys, i already rebuilt the carb... cleaned all the passages and put in new floats, needles, boot gasket, etc. and set the height BUT i actually think you may be right - that the float needle is sticking. I finally got my dream project out of my basement. The gas will not flow through the carburetor while everything is hooked up. if I crack open the the float bowl a hair, the gas begins to flow... tighten it back down... it stops.
