yep, that's what I thought too. that's how I noticed the noise, the clutch seemed to be a little sticky so I was just kicking it in neutral trying to get the engine not to turn with the clutch pulled in.

thank you both Waveblaster & Hahnda fdor your ideas. the tappets are lined up ok, when I turn engine using the stator bolt I don' hear any noise. i'm still stumped

I acquired a 67 CL-77 that it appears the engine and case have been apart. I was kicking the engine over in neutral, clutch in, ignition off, and hear noise like maybe the tappets are hitting the valve covers, took the covers off no difference. I checked tappet clearance, seems ok. released cam chai...

jensen, reguarding meten is weten gissen is missen, we say, close only counts in horse shoes, and hand grenades. kind of the same thought . i've got to ask how you're able to put so many km's on your bikes..... aren't you supposed to be keeping your finger in the dike?...otis

jensen , thanks for your reply, guess it's trail and error, or go with what you have 'cause that's all there is. looks like you have a nice collection of old hondas, are they all running? finding parts isn't easy but there is a lot of info on this site.
