ill try the oven trick then next. is there any need to have the head skimmed after or is there no chance of warping in from the heat?

Never had distortion problems but it always pays to check the flatness.

Cooking time

Provided that your wife's oven thermostat is working you can't overcook it, it will only get up to the temperature of the oven regardless of how long you leave it in there.

A cylinder head is a BIG lump of metal which will take a long while to heat right through.

I would say a minimum of 2 - 3 hours maybe longer and DON'T Forget some GOOD oven gloves, it would be a shame to drop it!

Never left one more than 1/2 an hour once the oven is up to temp and it has always worked,
as Dennis says use good gloves you really don't want to drop it, that's why I use welding ones.
