VIN and Photo
VIN and PhotoGood morning.
WAIT! Before you start wrenching today... Just picked up a scrambler at the Rhinebeck swap meet but I can't tell the year... nor can I find a decent authentic photo of what this bike looked like new. I've attached my VIN in hopes that someone can tell me the year and direct me to a photo. To me, the VIN looks like: CL77E-one-zero-five-four-seven-nine-eight Any help would be great appreciated...have a great day. C

Big, dual leading shoe, brakes? 7 digit serial numbers came in in 1964 and ran to the end of production in a continuous run. http://sinlesscycles.com/index.php/past ... -scrambler G

The number you gave is the engine number. Honda stamped both the frames and engines. As a general rule they don't match, and can be off as much as 200-300 digits and can be considered a born with engine to frame. The true VIN as intended by the factory would be the frame stamping, which is located on the left side of the steering tube/neck of the frame. It is not uncommon to have an engine from another year swapped into a 50+ year old frame. If your engine has been changed out, It can't be ascertained what year your bike is without more information.

Pretty sure that all 'big brake' CL77s had steel fenders. The one in the picture does.

I'm also pretty sure that ALL CL77s, even the small brake ones came with the rear muffler. First issue were simply slip on so if the owners didn't like them they were slipped off again and junked. To stop the practice Honda later welded the muffler onto one pipe.
