Too cold to do much work on the bike today so I collected up some stuff and went up to Mexborough to see the folks at Prestige Electroplating.

I was lucky to pick up a half-restored early-style right-hand muffler from Tim Miller so I am having that stripped before smoothing out a bit of gravel rash. With that done I'll decide if I am man enough to weld it back together.

Having modified a later steering lock cover by welding up the 'spare' hole, one turned up attached to an early triple clamp. Hopefully I'll end up with two good ones.

Still waiting for the weather to perk up. I picked up the muffler halves from the platers and was looking through the CMS site the other day and came up with with quite a few parts that had otherwise been out of stock fro a while. It pays to keep searching.

Particularly interesting for me was that they had big-end roller cages to help with the crank rebuilds I am slowly working through and they also had some 1961-specific parts like the speedo retaining spring.

I've been dragging my feet over the seat restoration. I've got a cover and foam but the base still needs some welding and I need to fashion some new strips that carry the little tangs which locate the cover. Mine are rotted away. We had our first dry, sunny day today so I was able to 'unpack' one of my sheds and right at the back were these two blue seats. I'd almost forgotten that I had them but they are both original unrestored items.

Interestingly one has a blue-painted base and the paint extends under the cover material. Both seats are early types with the chrome buckle but the other one des not appear to have blue paint underneath. The shade of blue seems to be a match for the seat material rather than the blue that the bike would have been painted.

The texture of the material on these seats is quite coarse. More so than any of the replacement covers I have found.

The back side of the straps shows the colour of the original material and it looks quite dark.

The better of the two seats (one has been painted with vinyl paint) has a nice logo on the back .

I took the better of the two straps and compared it with the strap of the Taiwanese cover that I bought and some coarse-grained material I bought off a supplier at Beaulieu Autojumble last year. As you can see, my autojumble find is a much closer match. It looks like I'll have to get someone to make me a cover out of this.

I might get this seat completed one day..... :-)

Graham, didn't you have a seat with 61 seat brackets on.
