1966 CA-77 Dream

Post by dreambike » Thu Nov 09, 2017 8:51 pm

Hi Fellow Vintage Honda lovers,
This is my first entry into the Honda forum, which I am excited to be part of, and share this common appreciation for these great motorcycles.
I have had my 66 CA-77 since the 80's, and enjoyed it in the condition I purchased it in. I last drove it in 2009 as I moved away to Europe. Before I left, I unfortunately put corn gas (ethanol) in the tank, where upon my return a year later, was shocked to find a good tank gone to the rust hell gods.
It was if it was sitting off the coast of florida in the sea. Well, that's been rectified and restored.
After much kicking, I finally got it to run, however ! once I put it in 1st gear, it lounges forward and stops the motor. I tried to adjust the clutch handle, and can't see either way that it makes any difference, also the big slotted adjuster by the cable going to cover, no difference. What can it be, that causes the bike to behave this way?
Thanks for your help
paul

Hi

Nice to have you on the forum. Please put your location in your profile and you can see if you are near other helpful members.

Your clutch plates have stuck together from standing.

You may be able to free by riding around or starting the bike in 4th gear and applying the rear brake. Warm the engine up first as thar shoul help.

If all else fails you'll need to take the clutch apart and clean the plates.

dream / abrupt clutch launch

Post by dreambike » Fri Nov 10, 2017 2:25 pm

Thank you for helping.
am not clear on the method? 1st I will let the bike idle for lets say 5 minutes or so? to warm up
2. then Im not clear , should I start it in 4th gear which I would think is not possible? or do you mean start it while on the center stand, then click it to 4th ?and let it run with rear wheel off the ground for awhile?
Thanks

Yes start on the center stand and change in to 4th gear (easy enough with the wheel off the ground). Warm it up for a few minutes then try to step on the brake (with the clutch lever pulled in) and see if it frees.

I warmed up bike, had running on center stand, had great difficulty to get it into 2,3, and 4th (crunching) when in 4th gear, seeing back wheel turning, put rear brake on , saw rear wheel stop, and then at same time the engine immediately stop! So why I dont know.

Paul, you know what you need to do - take the clutch apart, free the plates and at least clean them. It's really not a difficult job.
