you may need to tighten the head down fully before you can get the chain on.

with the top cover off?

I recommend you do as suggested.

How do I tighten the head fully with the top cover off so I can "set" the cam sprocket timing? Please forgive me for my lack of experience.

you have the head and cylinder surfaces broched/flattened?.

No, This engine had no base or head gasket leaks. I had a buddy check things when he did the valve job.

I made up a set of spacers to put on the studs so that I can tighten the head with the top cover off.

With the chain in place on one side of the sprocket turn the crankshaft slightly to take the slack out of that side of the chain and the other should drop into place, connect and rotate through to make sure timing is correct as it might show a tooth off, adjust as necessary.

Yup worked great. I still didn't like having to tighten the head gasket then loosening it again to get the top cover on....but it should be ok. Now on to the top cover packing & the camchain tensioner.

Pay special attention to the top middle "parts" so they have the oval cutouts forward/toward the exhaust. .....................lm
