Thanks G-Man! I was pretty sure I didn't have a shim at disassembly. The area of the brake housing outside the surface that contacts the inner race does not seem as recessed on my rear housing as yours appears to be, but it seems to be recessed enough to prevent interference. I really appreciate the pics.

Loud Mouse - I have already replaced the large seal. I left the brake shoes assembled when this was taken apart as they were in good shape so installing the large seal was made a little more difficult but not bad. I always try to utilize the old seals and bearings to drive the new ones in without damage. The old bearings I apply one cut all the way through one side then remove inner race and bearings and use the outer race to tap on against the new bearing. The slot in the old outer race makes for easy removal once the new bearing is seated.

I have spent a lot of time learning from everyone on this forum. This has been a long process, but has been way less difficult thanks to all here on the forum. It is very much appreciated.

Once I get this red beauty completed I will take some time and post the build. I started this project 4 years ago, worked on it about three months getting it disassembled and documented then had a hiatus of about 3 years before I started on it again. I'm about a year back into it now and am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. It has been and continues to be quite a challenge.

My guess would be grease out of the brakes.

I can confirm as Graham says there is no shim, just completed mine and it works just fine, mine is also Red and a similar timeline to yourself of 4 years.

Thanks malcomgb. Everything seems to be going smoothly. I am now entering final assembly, but just bought a house and am going all out trying to get it ready to move into and the old one ready to sell, so once again the CL waits...

I did get the rims reassembled and K-70's mounted. Had the spokes and nipples re-plated. In hindsight it probably would have been better, easier and probably cheaper to go through Buchannan's but it seems I've never been one to do things the easy way, and I'm trying to utilize as many original parts as possible.

I'm hoping once we get moved to have this baby together within a month. We'll see.
