Nuts from an oak tree. I have seen squirrels and other rodents pack exhausts full of them and seeds. It looks like the exhausts are new so it's a long shot that they are packed but you might consider trying to start the bike without them on.

Ah, I see. Thank you. The exhausts were completely new, and stored indoors prior to fitting. They were clear when fitted.

What occurred to me this morning, is that this could be gasket material? - Maybe a gasket that was hit by the pistons and broke? Is that possible? My thinking is that this needs to have come from somewhere between air-filter and downpipes. It's unlikely to be from the top end, and equally unlikely to be from the bottom end.

I've ordered a top end gasket set, and will get the engine out early this week for a look. While I'm there, I'll check the valve timing as I'm not able to get the static timing where the books say it should be.

Well, I didn't have to go too far... My own ham fistedness to blame.

In other news... The top cover is off of the engine. It appears that I have an 'endless' cam chain, and the cam sprocket timing punch mark is in the correct position. I'm still waiting for the gasket set, and was hoping to replace the head gasket as oil is leaking from the rear of the cylinders even without the engine firing up! Guess I'll have to split the camchain for that... Oh, man!

Hmmm... That was as supplied by the PO. I'll find a smaller one.

The correct CA72 / CA77 insulator has this cutout in it.
