Crank seal

Post by GTC » Sun Nov 20, 2016 3:42 pm

I have a 65 CL 77 I bought as a barn find last year, I got it running last year then tore it down for cleaning and paint. I got running last week took it for a short ride Friday 1 mile to a friends no problem came home and oil coming out of right side engine cover. Pulled the engine cover and found the oil seal up against the rotor. Any one know what would cause this?

Age. Lip seal degradation...due to...age. Or, clogged breather tube and the aged seal just couldn't handle the pressure and gave out.
My 66 ran fine for almost a year after several years in storage. It wasn't till I pressed the motor for a sustained 60 mph for a few miles did that same seal gave out. Time to do the bottom end (seal replacements) if the rest is holding out. By the way, just how much oil did you loose?

G3 Thanks for the reply. I didn't loose much oil only down about 1/8" on the stick, only traveled about 3 blks. I went back and tracked the oil trail.

Check the breather tube where it dumps out. The center stand can pinch it off when the stand is in the up position. My CL72 did that twice to me before I figured it out. Mine would pop the counter shaft seal where the clutch rod goes through, IIRC. But that was almost 40 years ago!
