Steverino's CB77

I've been slowly making some progress on the CB77. If I didn't have this leak, I would done. It's running down the upper engine case on the front left inner webbing. Here is a picture, if you look carefully you can see the drop, just ready to drop.

The oil seems to be leaking directly above that where the flange on the upper case mates with the bottom of the barrel. I know a lot of oil is pumping up and drain back down through that area but I don't remember there being an O ring there. Just O rings on the outer bolts.

Is there something I missed here? I've done several of the smaller twins and haven't had this problem before. I was careful to clean and check the mating surfaces and to torque the head bolts. The only thing I can think of is I missed an O ring.

There is no o-ring between the barrels and top case, only the base gasket.

Are eithe of the two knock pins sitting too proud of the case? Maybe they are a bit too long and holding the joint apart?

That could be G-Man. Thinking about those knock pins, When I assembled the engine, I figured the correct torque of the head bolts would draw them up.
I started preparing to drop the motor this afternoon and I will have a better look this weekend. I will check for gapage between the barrel and engine case in that area before I pull the top end.

Below the picture of the motor is an organizer I bought at harbor freight. I hope to do away with all the cardboard boxes I spend so much time sifting through looking for parts.

When you have the top end off, put the barrel back on without base gasket you can then pull everything down and see if there is a gap.

Love the organizer. Spent more than a week searching fro the one kickstart gear that I knew I had. It turned up after I'd found a replacement......:-)

I wish I would have noticed this when I installed it. I have the wrong gasket. I'm glad I was putting plenty of oil to the top end on the first fire up. Is there an early and a late gasket?
