For me I would just fill with JB weld I know it has to be done right with metal, but that JB stuff is so good (I found JB on this forum first).

Me being an old guy and look for a easyer way out my Triumph 5TA has never had a centre stand fitted as both the mounting hole are elongated so after some 30 odd years of owning the bike and just using the side stand, I thought it was about time it had a stand so I got two steel bush's made up put them into the holes and held them in place with JB and expecting them to give way the first time I pulled the bike onto the centre stand you know what after some 18 months or more the bush's have not moved.

I spent most of my working life in and around G.R.P and reinforced plastics so no way would them bush stay in I thought but they have and they just may out live me.

Im not saying use JB Weld instead of welding, done right welding is always the best in the long term in my opinion any plastic is plastic and will for me never replace metal.
But then I was born in an age when the only plastic there was was bakelite.

Good thoughts. This Techno-Weld stuff is sort of half-way between JB-Weld and 'real' aluminium welding. I have been welding and soldering things most of my life and prefer the metal-to-metal joint. I did use JB weld (English equivalent) here to fill some of the small pits and scratches in the casings before paint so I am not adverse to using it.

If you have the skill of AlanW then proper welding with proper equipment is the answer. For me the low temperature stuff suits me and my tools.

G-Man, I haven't been on here, in quite awhile. I went to checking out what all was going on this time and came across your restoration build and so far have only gotten to page 14. All I can say is, What An Impressive Build!! The Details, the Photos and the way you go about things, is most Interesting & Impressive. Your knowledge and attention to detail just overwhelms me. I will be getting on with checking this thread out, til the CB72 is finished. My hat is off to You Sir, for keeping it as close as humanly possible, to original. Got a '66 CB77 myself and a story behind My Love for these bikes, but won't interrupt any further. Bill

Good to have you back, and glad you like the thread. I was really lucky to pick up this bike and have enjoyed the help and guidance of many friends on here. I am enjoying the research as much as the workshop craft, which is my real passion. These early bike have a lot of detail to get right and I like to delve into the engineering behind the little changes that Honda made.

Sometimes the motivation was cost, sometimes reliability but always there had to be a reason. On this particular bike everything needs attention so its a long journey.

Feel free to chip in any time. It's always good to get feedback and comments.

Just looking at my primary covers. I have two off 1961 engines. The first (off a spare engine) looks like a later type with what looks to me a protecting rib on the clutch oil gallery.

The other one which is off my project bike, looks like the early type cover but has a later Oil filter cover with the Honda script on it. Notice the lack of the rib at the bottom of the cover.

This is the one that I'll clean up for the bike but it looks like it has some minir damage on the oil gallery at the bottom.

I've already found a early oil filter cover without any markings .

This picture frrom Ted's Specials shows what I am aiming for.

There are a lot of parts that have been swapped out on this bike during its "cafe-racer" phase.

This is the original primary cover in place. Many original equipment like the forks and fenders got replaced when the bike was thrown down the road so I guess that's why it has a later oil filter cover.
