Does the back plate actually say Stanley, or is he just reading that off the lens? Everything else looks stock. I'm thinking it's an aftermarket back plate on stock hardware. It's not the kind of thing I would expect to see Stanley manufacture. They didn't really do "dress up" stuff.

I can't say for sure what the markings on the rear of the plate says. All I know is that it all came in one box including the license plate holder which says "Stanley" on it as well but I'll know more this week.

I figured either way It was a nice find seeing I've never run across one before. I never even knew one existed before I seen this one. The part I found odd was the fact that the back ground of the wording was green. I've never seen a green Dream before although I've seen other motorcycle owners "Green" with envy wanting one :)

Received the new tail light plate today. It is a very unique piece. I've personally haven't seen one on a Dream before.

It don't have the "Stanley" name on it but put it next to the original plate and it's the exact same except for the top part. Never the less I really like it although I may decide to change the color of the wording to red. For those who are interested I've attached a few more pictures. The mystery continues! Paul

I don't know if te part you show is original, but I have a simular item, exept it's made of clear plastic (perspex ?) It says dream 300 and lights up when the taillight is on.

I wanted to find out what is was, and after a few years I did, here's the story :

a few years ago I posted the same question (on the 305 mailing list) and I got one answer from a member :

Dear Jensen,

My first Honda was a 1963 C77, a 305 Dream with
pressed metal (not tubular) handlebars. It had the
taillight you describe. The bulb was tubularwith
conical metal contacts at each end, and it burned out
often. I have not seen such a taillight since.

My answer :

thanks you for your information,
It clears the mist a little bit.

What I know until now :

it is original Honda, that's for sure
it is a part without part number, neither it's
described in the part mauals that I know of.
it seems that only the 305 cc dreams from a
particular year had this taillight
it seems that not all 1963 C77 dreams had this
taillight (I know a lot of
them without this taillight, but with pressed
steel handlebars)

questions to be solved :

was it a special ?
why is it so rare ?
was it mounted by the dealers or at the Honda
factory itself ?

Jensen

second answer of this member :

Dear Jensen,

I bought that bike new at a small store in Toronto
Ontario Canada. I am sure that the taillight was
standard. Honda parts were not easily obtained in
1963, and I can think of no reason why the owner would
have changed the taillight. The rear of that
motorcycle suffered a lot of vibration, and wore out
three license plates and at least one plate-mounting
bracket in the year I owned it. I was forever buying
new plates, fashioning a replacement bracket, and
buying new bulbs. Someone rear-ended me, and the
repair to the damage changed the natural frequency of
the vibrations, and taillights started lasting
longer.

I traded the Dream in on a 1964 Super Hawk, and I have
not owned a Dream since then.

Good luck with yours. If I find out anything about
that part, I will write again.

My second reply :

It's a long time ago, but I got the answers on my questions, since you where
the only one who responded I share these with you.

I know now that the tailight as described in my
previous mails is original honda, it has indeed no part numbers, and it was a
jubileum part, mounted only on CA77 and C77 in the last months of sale in
1962-1963, so november, december and some in januari. these taillights where
meant to go with the last pressed steel handlebars. The tailights where send from honda to
several (high volume) dealers (not to all), the dealer himself had to mount the tailight
on the motorcycle. The tailight on my dream (with tubelar handlebars) was a
dealer "mistake", but its' one of the first with
tubelar handlebars.

The reason that I know is that I found an original
new tailight in the box
with a letter from honda with instructions for the
dealer.

Troyce Walls from Fla. has this same light on one of his early Honda's. He shows his early bikes around the southeast and has many domestic models only sold in Japan. The light is on a 59 Benly if memory serves me right. His is clear and lights up when the tail light is on. I see him at shows and will ask about the light next time we meet.
