63 305 Dream missing coil and plug wires

Post by GiveMeYourBacon » Sat May 30, 2015 8:48 pm

OK so I have done some reading through the forums and I think I have come to the conclusion that I'm going to pick up a coil from a Honda cb550.

What I havnt found too clear of info on is the wires to use. Is this something in going to have to piece together myself ? Or is there a plug and play wire set I can purchase

Also if there is a CURRENT source for electronic ignition rather than points and condensor pls link for me

Welcome to the forum, fellow Bacon Lover.

I've recently had to install one of my old CB750 coils on our Dream because the original coil was failing. The CB550 one should work as well.

You can basically use any dual-fire ignition coil that has 12 Volts and 4-5 Ohms primary resistance. Google ignition coil 12 V dual and pick one with close to 5 Ohms resistance. You may have to get creative mounting any one you get... but... I'm planning eventually to get the bolt-on set up (DC8-1A) Charlie's Place is selling. It includes the coil, wires, caps, and a custom bracket. Plug and play, as you say!

Although you can still piece together everything you need separately. You'll need about 4 feet of copper core plug wire. I think 7mm is the stuff. Cut it in half to have one for each plug. I got mine from O'Reilly Auto Parts but you can find it online too. You can get non-resistor NGK LZFH plug caps, which is what I use. Then you just need a coil and a way to mount it.

Here's an example of someone who went with an Accel coil and mounted it himself.
Mine: '74 CB750 K4 -- Hers: '64 CA78
Had: '75 CB550 K, '79 CT90

OR...............I just tore down a running CA77 because of no title and several missing parts. The coil with wires is available..........no caps..........$40 shipped from Wisconsin.

OldScrambler - Is your coil still available? I'm searching for one for my 1966.
