Taper Steering BearingsTaper Steering BearingsAny one have a line on some taper bearing for the steering?
Measure the stem diameter top and bottom and the headstock bore and look for the right bearings at a bearing stockist. The "kits" are just made up from standard bearings. You may need a spacer for the bottom race to get clearance between botom triple clamp and headstock.
This is where I get my bearings..... http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/Bearin ... index.html G '60 C77 '60 C72 '62 C72 Dream '63 CL72

Before complete disassembly, make sure you measure the distance from the top of the steering stem to the top of the steering head on the frame as a reference point. After the bearing installation, you may have to install a shim under the lower tapered bearing on the steering stem to restore correct spacing and geometry. Regards, Chase
Steverino...............Your particular set of bearings may be fine..........especially since you keep them clean, well greased, and they have minimal mileage. I have purchased 22 Scramblers (got one today for $150 with a title but its not picture worthy) and have been able to re-use the original races and bearings from the relatively clean units.
However: I have installed the tapered bearing kits on CB750s and noticed an immediate improvement to the feel of the steering. I plan to install a similar set of tapered bearings on a somewhat modded 305 Scrambler build using XL350 suspension and a few other custom touches.
I have one of the All Balls 22-1011 kits for my CL72, not fitted yet, it includes both bearings, 2 spacers and 2 seals.
The original lower bearing was 18mm high, the new one 15mm so will use the supplied 2.9mm spacer, one of the supplied seals fits neatly between the bearing inner and outer races. I plan on fitting the seal between the bearing and the spacer. The original top bearing and new bearing are both 15mm so should fit exactly. I have read on the forum about others using this kit but never seen a definitive guide about which parts they used and how, any advice would be welcome to me. 1977 CB400F
