Chrome Scramblers?

Post by maxdog » Tue Apr 21, 2015 1:15 pm

I have seen from time to time, pictures of chrome scramblers. Chrome tank, side covers, fenders. Not too much conversation about this. Were these a stock option and what years produced, and what numbers produced?

Chrome fenders were stock on the latest '67 production. All chrome tanks, side-covers and such were custom items. Somewhere someone will have a story about the all-chrome presentation bike made to a special dealer.

This is one I picked up late last year. Hubs, sprocket, side cases, tool holder, handle bar clamps, side covers, spokes and rims were all chrome plated supposedly by previous owner. I am told he owned Ron Jon surf shops and this was used as a prop in one of his first shops. This is why it is all chromed out. Currently I have been collecting the correct parts to make it road worthy again. It sat without running for decades just the way it is. During a quick evaluation ride the speedo cable pulled out of it's crimped connector and scrambled the wire harness in the headlight. I am pulling the engine this weekend for a complete reseal and carb rebuild.

This is just a thought. Maybe you should check to see whether this bike was ever in a magazine article, an ad or any other publicity venue with the Ron Jon connection. Ron Jon is an old, well established brand and there could be more value in keeping it like it is. I prefer mine original but this may be an exception. Just food for thought.

Hi
Your pics of the black scrambler: I just noticed a luggage rack on the back. I am looking for a rack for my 67 CL77 that does not have to be cobbed together to fit. The one on yours almost looks factory. Do you have any specs on it? I would be interested. AND, can you send some closeup pics of the rack too?

Thanks
