67 CL77, First start up, but problems

Post by ugmold » Thu Apr 02, 2015 2:51 pm

Got my CL77 in December. New Points, Condenser, Plugs, Battery, set valves, cleaned carbs, changed oil. Used Ed Moore's Tune-up info, which seemed to go well.
Finally warm and enough snow melted to get it out of the basement. After 10 or so kicks I sounded like it wanted to go. 20 kicks later it finally started and idled! So I let it be for a few minutes, seemed it was running only on the right side as the left pipe was cold. Made sure gas was getting to the left carb, but still the same. Checked spark and both sides were sparking. Took off the carbs and gave them another cleaning. Put them back on, same deal. gas started oozing out around the left exhaust, so I figured gas is getting in there, just not being fired. Valves moved ok.
Took off the points cover and found the left side points not opening. Can't imagine how I got spark?
Right side looks good. Turned the plate but didn't get the left side to open. I am pretty sure all was right when I initially installed. Not sure what I should check now. The advance mechanism is under the head right? oh boy.
Ideas?
Thanks,
-Forrest

I don't want to step on Ed's great recipe but....I was confused at step 7.

"Set "R" points to .014. Tighten the screws. (you are through with them!"

Should they be set to .014 while open or closed? I have to figure it out every time I set them. Anyway, maybe that is the problem. Good luck.

Gap is set when the points are all the way open.

Today I turned the stator over with a wrench until I felt the compression with my finger. Went to the "F" , a short throw away. Points were closed, another revolution and the points opened. So at the furthest open point on the lobe I set the points to .014. Now I decided to turn the stator again to where the left side was at it widest point and set that to 14 and yes they were starting to open at "LF". The plate is centered, I figured a good place to start.

Both plugs spark, one right after the other. Put in the plugs, started on 1st kick, even idled, but once again the left pipe is cold and gas was oozing out on the pipe.

I find both the downloaded CL77 owners handbook and Ed's instructions rather vague, with all due respect. Probably make perfect sense to someone more familiar. Can anybody help?

Thanks,
-Forrest

Its possible that you may still need to fine tune your timing but if you have spark it should run.

I would double check your float level in your carbs and even check to make sure your float hasn't got some gas in it and sank. Its pretty easy to flood a hole out on these.

Thanks for the reply, It seems to be getting gas in the cylinder, just not firing, The plug is wet and gas oozes out onto the exhaust pipe.

Put a new plug in that cylinder, the old one is most certainly gas-fouled by now.
