CA77 Ignition box Mounting

Post by willy_j » Sun Jan 25, 2015 7:22 pm

After receiving my electronic ignition from Probe, I am brainstorming as to where I can mount it without getting close to the coil or ignition leads as per instructions. Anyone have experience to share on where they found to be the best location? I'm thinking of placing it up in the frame where the tank mounts. Should be plenty of airflow there. Thoughts and opinions? Pictures would be appreciated if possible.

I have a Superhawk, I'm not sure what the Dream arrangement is like, but maybe what I did will help you. I put control box on the tool box, right side, facing forward. The forward part of the tool box is not vertical, obviously, but it worked perfectly. It's hidden under the side cover, and the wiring harness is tucked away along the frame spine, also not obvious. There is plenty of air flow around it, there have been no heating issues what so ever. It came with velcro, but I discovered that it didn't stick as well as I'd have liked, so I used a black zip-tie around the whole thing to help it.

You can see it in the photo, just sticking down a little below the bottom of the tool box.

By the way, the photo was taken early on after I'd mounted the engine on the frame. The plug wires were not properly routed, they should run from the coils down between the carburetors, then through the plug wire guides and to the plugs.

Well, I finally got around to installing the electronic ignition. After following the instructions, I took the leap of faith. Fired right up like a charm, not a miss could be heard. Ended up mounting the box on the battery side on the inside, behind where the dust cover is installed. worked on adjusting the plate until the idle timing was set. Checked advance with my timing light, set the knob to proper advance, and checked the full advance. came in about two degrees before the marked timing advance marks. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's better for the advance to be slightly retarded than too far advanced, so I decided it was safe where it was. Throttle response is infinitely better than when I first started. Do need to adjust the A/F mixture. Time to move the needle up a notch. Plugs were almost black.

Willy

Sounds like a good result.

Moving the clip on the needle up a notch will drop the needle down and weaken the midrange A/F ratio which is what you need.

Yeah... been a while since I cracked open a carb... must've been thinking of fuel screw that needs to move out for the air. Or I'm just plain backwards lately. Take your pick.
