1961 CB72 Project

Here is a note I got from Ray Weissbrot, who owns the bike that was raced in the 1961 TT.

"Hi Graham , the chrome parts on yours and the others bikes were part of the late 60s customising craze there were so many cb72s on the road that owners wanted to make their bikes stand out from the crowd. I was one of them , I had some parts chromed & a few other parts stoved metallic cherry red .
The chrome wasn't a factory option. Hope this is of some use , Cheers RAY."

It was nice to get back into the workshop this weekend. I have worked the last three so I was eager to get things going again.

My old(ish) ultrasonic cleaning bath gave up the ghost before Christmas so after repairing it several times I picked up a new 6L one that will take bigger parts. Once I filled it up I had to try it out and got a bit carried away cleaning all sorts of things including early Dream handlebar grips.

It was great to discover that I could get an entire hub in there. I had to keep turning the part but it was amazing to see the original surface appear out of the grime. The 1961 hub will need minimal polishing after a dunk in the cleaner. Even the brake shoes have had the treatment, getting rid of that horrible brake dust in the process.

These top triple clamps looked to be in a terrible state and came up to a nice shine after just a few minutes in the bath. Even the intricate underside of the casting was nice and fresh.

After the cleaning frenzy, I thought I'd better get back to the job in hand and have started the work of checking and truing all of the joint faces on those 50 year-old castings before the engine goes back together.

Graham, what is the cleaning solution you use in the ultrasonic bath? I apologize if you've already answered this! The job it does is amazing, the parts look just spectacular.
