Bad news. Kick starter is pretty shot. Shaft is pretty bad as well. It was freely spinning on the shaft when i got it and now i see why. Basically no spline left on either. On the plus side the starter does seem to have the rare index punch LM referenced in some other thread. Also a pic of the speedo. Having a heck of a time getting the carbs off. Having a heck of a time getting a wrench on the 2 inner bolts. Will swing by harbor freight over lunch tomorrow.

CArbs off

Post by jugger18 » Thu Nov 06, 2014 6:11 pm

Got the carbs off after a trip to harbor freight to buy more wrenches (my cobbled set did not have a 10mm). Left carb looks great. right carb has some damage. Not sure what to do here. See attached pic. The o-ring seems to still make a tight seal.

Is that damage into the grove where the O ring lives? If it is, you could fill it will JB Weld. You'd have to do some sanding afterwards to level it out so that it matches the rest of the bore. Put an old O ring (or something like it) in the groove to keep the JB Weld out of it when you apply it.

As an alternative, there are carburetors to be had on eBay.

Your speedo looks pretty nice! Do you know if the tach and speedo work? You can check it by using a drill motor.

It is actually just behind where the oring would live. I was thinking jbweld as well. The speedo is in very good shape. No idea if it works. The bike was sitting in a barn for ~25yrs before i saved it. The owner was tearing down the barn ad was going to dig a pit and bury the bike.

It does look like scoring a new kickstart gear and arm is going to take a while and some coin as well.

Yeah, those kick start idler gears are sought after and can be expensive! Sometime's it's cheaper to buy a complete case cover to get those parts.
