Hanging slides...

Post by Crispy1 » Wed Sep 10, 2014 2:05 pm

After the scare of a bad compression test from not opening the throttle, I am back to figuring out why my bike won't run.
What I've noticed is the engine starts right up and idles fine. When cold, it has crispy throttle response and sounds great. Once hot, it's sluggish to rev and the throttle hangs and won't come back to idle as fast or not at all.
My question(s): Is it typical for sticky slides from warped flanges/spacers to not act up until hot? And if those needles were hanging a little high, would that give me this symptom of not getting back up my hill? It will stay running, barely, but will not take any load when you put it in gear and won't take any throttle. I have floored it at this point and had it recover which speaks to the mid range circuit being confused by a hanging main jet needle.
Thanks, C.

That's a good one. I will check that. My gut is I haven't gone far enough to have a venting issue.

The throttle doesn't have a strong return any time. I guess I should go through the twist grip and cables. Is this an area that gets sluggish on unrestored bikes?

Thanks, C.

Followup:
’64 CB77 with 15k miles. I surfaced the flanges and insulator/spacers but still had a problem. With the air filters off, I could see the right side slide not returning freely to idle. To rule out the cable, I removed the cable and needle from the slide and checked the movement in the bore (with the carb bolted on). It was sticky. I put it in upside down just for grins and it was much better. With 400 “wet or dry” on a ground surface, I noticed around the slot for the cable there was an area of resistance (high spot). I worked that a bit and looked for any other scratches that I could feel. I then put some duct tape on my 3-jaw chuck and polished the slide with the 400 using a lathe. I swapped ends to get the whole thing and checked from time to time. It took 3 sessions on the lathe with 400 and the slide was much better, not perfect but better. I free-hand polished the bore too. The problem is fixed for now although I think my return springs should be replaced. I have stretched them but they may be tired. The cables seem to be free. Had a good test ride. I’m loving the bike. C.
