This bike is going to grow on you more than you can imagine. You will find yourself making the flimsiest excuses to ride it: like going out to get the paper in the morning (which is in the box 50 feet from the front door and making a 20 mile trip of it.)
Really good job on this bike: congratulations and enjoy !

More progress! I installed those new Shinko tires, BikeMaster TR6 tubes and rim strips, and did a reasonably thorough clean and de-rusting.

There was lots of embedded rust under the rear wheel's rim strip, I bet caused by the bike being left outside with deflated tubes by a prior owner (I'm fortunate enough to garage all my vehicles). The front wheel wasn't bad, but I spent two hours using a rotary wire brush to remove surface crust and I progressively soaked the rims in Metal Rescue. I also checked the brake pads, actuators, etc. and cleaned all the brake residue out.

I went for a quick night ride on the new tires and was pleased. The new cables, clean brakes, handlebars, new clutch plates and tires have made a huge difference in ridability already. I was struck by how quickly it wants to steer into corners, I imagine due to the shorter wheelbase, shorter handlebars and tighter rake than my V-Strom 650 and CRF230L.

I was also struck by how firmly I have to shift this bike, especially into 2nd gear, and the clutch grab point feels a little different for the 2nd gear. I'll monitor it and see if it smoothens out as I get used to the bike or if it worsens. With other bikes, that can indicate a worn shift fork.

It's still leaking some oil and I have more cleanup and cosmetic work to do, but she's rideable!

Just watched your "oil screen and pump" video.
The parts microfiche shows the gasket with the circular cut out going on the screen, and the irregular one between the screen and bottom plate.
I am still confused about it as mine had two circular gaskets.

The one with the "O" goes on the pump.
The open one goes on top of the screen and against the lower engine case.
You don't need to worry about not having the open gasket as long as yours fits and doesn't leak. .................lm

DAMN!
I put new ones in following the parts fiche.
Do you think I should take them out, reverse them, and pray it doesn't leak?
