I don't think the problem is spring rate, it's total lack of dampening. At least on mine. You can make is stiff as hell but it will still bounce without any dampening.

I agree, that is most likely the problem. I removed the springs on mine to check the shocks when I had the bike apart, mine were good and they don't bounce. I weight about 210. Spacers would make for a stiffer suspension and possibly reduce bounce because of that. If you do decide to put in spacers, that's a good time to check the shocks, then at least you'll know where you stand.

well , yes it is the dampening that is the trouble. just had a hope that stiffing the springs might help. I know it won't, but I'm grasping at straws.

The spacer modification does not give you modern suspension, but it did help me win the AMA Mid-Ohio Vintage MotoX this year (my age class) on a 1963 Dream......
