Help! I pulled a nipple off my petcock

Post by Kickstart » Tue Aug 19, 2014 9:13 pm

Not to offend anyone :)

But it's true, I pulled the barb nipple off of my petcock when trying to remove the 30+ y/o hardened fuel line.

Warning... Some of you may find the following image inappropriate:

Can I just jam it back in there (is it getting hot in here?)

As you can see, I have two other issues as well:
  • Reserve tube (or main tube) - anyone have any luck with drilling it out and replacing it with some brass tubing from the local craft store? - if so, how long/high should it be?
Holes in the filter bowl - patch this or just buy a replacement?

The tube is not a problem. Put it in and tap carefully with a hammer. Should be just fine.

Thanks Brady,

Interesting that it's just an interference fit. You'd think with gasoline behind it would be fastened in a way that would prevent it from pulling out.

Regarding my other issue... the missing reserve tube... anyone know how tall (long) it should be?

fuel cock woes

Post by G3 » Thu Aug 21, 2014 9:57 pm

Fuel Cap is available at Ohio Cycle, but you'll have to ask Nick about the cup o-ring/packing availability (or check www.CMSNL.com). May as well do what you can to rebuild the innards of the fuel valve while you've gottit apart.
The reserve tube on my 66 CL appears to be about 3 to 3-1/2" tall. Interesting that CMSNL doesn't even show the reserve tube on their parts fische. HEY ED....!
Hope it all works out for you.

The reserve tube is part of the petcock, just like those nipples so will not be listed separately. I measured it for Sarals on here a few months back but I'm not at home so cannot repeat the favour. It sets the quantity of reserve fuel in the tank so the dimension is not critical.

Those nipples do have some sealing material around them to keep them in. Maybe JB weld would help there?

On advice of 48lesco, I used red loctite on the nipple. Just clean it up and tap it in after application of the loctite to the nipple. No problems since.
