Swap meet find- 67 Scrambler restoreGetting down to the final pieces. Just received my Shinko tires. 2.75-19 front, 3.50-19 rear. Just waiting for the front tube. A new battery is on order. Unfortunately I couldn't find an AGM to fit, had to go with plain old lead acid. I do have a tender, so hope it will last for a while. It looks like I'll be able to ride it next week.
I had a problem with weeping carb gaskets. I purchased new one, they ended up being paper and the fuel would soak through. Not a lot, just enough that I could wipe my finger across it and it would be damp. I purchased some gasket material that was supposed to be fuel resistant, not much better. Got some butal rubber and cut them out of that, seemed to do the trick. I'll be making one for the early style carb on the CA77 soon. It seeps a bit as well. On the to do list-order tank badges and resew or recover the seat. But first I'll probably head for the DMV to get it registered. That shouldn't be a problem, I have a title, but then l've learned not to take anything for granted at the DMV.

Finally got my battery yesterday, took them three weeks to get it in. Good thing I wasn't in a rush, although I was getting concerned. Took it out for a test drive around my place (not registered for the road yet.) Starts right up 1st or 2nd kick. Runs and shifts excellent. Gearing is quite a bit higher than I expected. It had a 15 tooth front sprocket and 33 tooth rear. I checked the rear several times, I've seen 34 tooth for this bike for sale but not 33. Anyway, I've got 5 acres with a gravel driveway down the side, so I could crank it up some. Much more torque and pickup than my CA77. Could only get it up to about 40 on the speedometer. I'm not sure how accurate it is with the 19 x 2.75 on the front. I'm guessing it reads a little fast. It feels different because it sits higher, but handles my mowed field pretty good.
When I was cleaning things up, I thought the drive chain looked good. It was rusty ( I thought surface rust), so I soaked it in Evaporust, heated it up in water, dried it out in the BBQ (propane) and bathed it in hydraulic oil while warm. I let it drain off and wiped it down. When I installed it I noticed the PO had the axle adjusted nearly to the max. I took out a link (he had back to back master links) and it was about right with the axle all the way forward. I'm pretty sure it wasn't too tight. That was a waste of time! When I was riding last night my wife thought she heard a chain noise. I checked it out after riding it again this morning. The chain was very loose. I found 5 broken side links, luckily not across from each other. I'll be getting a new chain SOON. It sits until I do. 63 CA78
It needs to be able to rev a little bit to be happy, 37 teeth was standard, 33 teeth is way too high. 15/37 gets you 25 mph in first gear, 50 in second and 75 plus in third. I've run both 33 and 37 tooth rear sprockets on trips. 37 teeth on the rear gives better acceleration, smoother running and the same or better fuel mileage.
