LOUD SLAPPING NOISE WHEN STARTING

305 CA77- when cranking engine there is a loud sound metal slapping metal about 4-5 hits before engine starts.After starting no noise heard.This does no happen every time starting.No noise heard at RPM,runs fine.I checked timming chain tensioner,ok & starter is not hanging up.

It could be your starter clutch slipping. Pretty common to have happen and fairly easy to fix.

Does the sound seem to be coming from the right side?

H; noise is with electric start only? try kick, narrow it down. probably only need to RR starter clutch, check for loose screws, and assemble clutch DRY!

hard to pinpoint the noise but I would say right side

The clutch does slip now,dics are worn.Does the clutch stay dry after install?It seems to me that they were wet when I was checking them.

The starter clutch and the clutch are two different things. The starter clutch is pictured above. It uses 3 rollers, springs, and pins. As the rollers wear they tend to slip. Quite common. The clutch that transmits power through the transmission is the one that uses steel and friction plates. Those should have oil on them.
