Find the joining link. Attach the new chain to the old one and pull through until the link shows up again. Connect the two ends of the new chain and you are done.

That would work EXCEPT the old chain came completely off when it broke. It's sitting on my garage floor right now.

Like I asked before G-Man. Do I need to take the left shock off to get the top cover off. I'm trying to get some advice rather than just pulling everything apart... but if I have to I will.

If you have the bike where you can look at the area you need to work at.
Take a chance and try to remove the cover without removing the shock.
Then you could tell us how things worked out. ................LM

It's only a couple of nuts to undo to pull the shock off. Hardly a big issue....

Every day is a school day. That's the fun of these old bikes.

O. K. I did have to pull the shock to get the rest of the chain cover off. Now I just have to wait for the new chain to be delivered and see if I can thread the chain around the front sprocket without dismantling any more of the bike.

On the plus side... the bike wouldn't idle (sat for 2 years) unless the choke was all the way closed. I put a bottle of Techron in the gas tank last night and let it sit until this morning. After running for a couple of minutes on full choke I was able to open the choke and it idles fine now. At least I don't have to pull the carb now.

Make up a hook from an old wire coat hanger or a welding rod to help position the chain over the front sprocket. Once you have it over the sprocket you can hook up the end and pull it through.
