What a concept - A Girl Bringing Back Her 1966 Super Hawk
Okay, left side muffler is on. It pretty much bolted right up. I removed the header pipe, put the bolt that screws into the engine in place, loosely, and then pushed the back of muffler down until the bracket bolt lined up with the footpeg mount. I stabbed the bolt, and then while keeping pressure on the rear of the muffler, I tightened the left rear top motor mount bolt. Everything, including the left header pipe, screwed together nicely after that. Oh, I used a spare handlebar bolt for the strut mount, and a cap nut to secure it. It worked perfectly!
I'll test fit the right side muffler tomorrow. I can't install it until the swingarm is repainted and the rear wheel and chain are installed. 1965 CB77 305 Super Hawk

rusty rimsyou might try some fine-ish steel wool dipped in 30-wt on the rusty parts...then maybe some phosphoric acid (evapo-rut, etc.)...maybe a touch of rattle-can silver on the worst parts...once you get a little road dust on it you might be able to live with it.

Hi, Lee! Actually, there is no longer any rust on her at all, EXCEPT for the rims.. There is some corrosion on the spokes and rims, the hubs will polish out. Everything else has been cleaned and derusted. I used an acid for the chrome, and scraped, sanded and cleaned then repainted most everything else. Aluminum was cleaned and polished where it needed to be. There is some pitting in some of the chrome - the handlebars, the trim on the front forks, shock covers, etc, but it's to be expected for the age of the bike and it doesn't look bad at all. It lends it a "survivor charm"!

You know what? I'm going to leave the saddle pan "as is". I'll clean it a little more, but "nothin' says lovin' like somethin' from the oven". This will be a testament to how she USED to look.

I tried all of the tricks I could find on these 305forums, including Jensey's excellent writeup, plus a few of my own, but the right muffler would NOT bolt up properly. The photos show the result. It's attached at the engine mount and by the footpeg perch hanger bolt, but it's not fastened to the strut. It needed to go forward about 3/16's of an inch, and it would not.
The footpeg perch looks straight to me, but obviously something is off. It's going to stay the way it is.

And, finally: she's ready to start. If you'll notice, the key is in the ignition! I still need to service the battery and charge it, put oil in the engine and front forks, flush the gas tank, put some gas in it, turn her over a bit with the spark plugs out to get her pre-lubed, and then.....

Those are expensive pieces (muffler and footpeg bracket) that could develop cracks if the system isn't bolted-up properly. It looks like you're close enough that if you loosen everything up including the swingarm bolt it should go with gentle persuasion. I've swapped a few of these mufflers and I don't recall ever having not used a pry bar...
