Sara,

Very nice job! Be very cautious when applying the panels or you may slice the finish like a cheese grater. I have used very thin cardboard, like poster board, after a fresh paint job. Did you test fit the panels before paint to see how they fit and where they might scrape? If you have your old tank I would recommend practice fitting on the old tank to get your technique down and see what pitfalls may lie in waiting.

Excellent finish!

Give the paint a week or so to properly harden and then make sure that the slots on the tank and the tangs on the panels are nice and open. They should go back on nicely....

I just got back from the Stafford Classic bike show where the Mike Buttinger (CMS in Holland) collection is being auctioned off tomorrow. There is an unused Superhawk there with only one mile on the speedo. It doesn't look anything special for the guide price of $13-16k. Yours will look nicer and will be better loved.....

Yes, I did test fit the panels before painting, and they are tight, but they'll go. I'll be patient! I love cardboard idea, I'll do that.

Graham - you didn't come home with the CR93?? I'd have traded an offspring for that! The Superhawk, did it sell at that price?

Don't know about the outcome of the sale. I only went for the viewing day. The CR93 sure wads lovely, and there was a nice CB160-based copy.

Graham, it sure looked like a good time! I'll have to keep my eyes open for such events close to here.

I see that the CB77 didn't sell. It was a bit rich! I noticed, too, that the Suzukis, the ones that did sell, didn't bring that much money. I would have thought a Katana would be sought after. Apparently not!

I've been thinking a lot about what to do when I finish the Old Girl. I love being on this site, and I feel I need a project to keep me posting here. I've always liked CL160's, and then there is the 305 Scrambler. That would do it! Then again, I've been in love with the CBX since I first saw one (and I let a guy talk me out of buying one "It's too big a bike for you, Little Lady...."). Nowadays a running CBX is super pricy, and so I'd probably only be afford a basket case, IF that. But, I'll look around. A Scrambler would sure be fun, though, fun to ride, too, and then I'd have another long winded restoration thread I could write! ;)

I spent some time working on the saddle yesterday. The pan is in pretty good shape. There is patina towards the front, where battery acid apparently splashed on it, and there are some rusty spots on the mounts. I've decided to just spot paint those areas rather than redo the whole pan. First off, I don't want to disassemble the saddle. The padding is worn, but serviceable, and the profile is good. The cover has some minor tears here and there, but it looks great and it too is serviceable. Then again, going with the theme of the Old Girl (there is one, after all), she is a Survivor, repaired and running (soon), and a saddle with mild patina will work on her perfectly. I will clean the cover and I'll repaint the "HONDA" badge on the rear of it (I have the stencil), and then I'll spot paint the worn areas on the pan, and it will be good to go.

As an Engineer of 30+ years standing, to me the Honda CBX was just everything a motorcycle shouldn't be. Honda made some daft bikes in its time and the RC30 will be remembered long after the CBX is forgotten. If they could have made something midway between the Dream 50 and the CBX as a retro-homage to the 60's GP bikes I think it would have been a winner.

Now if you really wanted a 6-cylinder race bike, it would have to be this BSA I saw at the Show. 1500cc Vee-six based on the old BSA A75 Rocket 3 engine with an extra bank of cylinders. Converted to DOHC just for an extra twist. All in a slightly modified Rob North frame. I can'r wait to hear this run.
