Exessive engine noise

Post by daywalker » Sun Jun 09, 2013 8:06 pm

I recently purchased a 66 Dream CA77 from a Honda dealership. It starts right up right away without any trouble. The problem I am faced with now is the noise the engine rattles out. I am not good at all with servicing motors and was wondering if I could get some advice. I know it's kind of difficult to make a diagnosis over the internet without someone taking it apart themselves. I'm just looking to get some most likely causes. I would love to get the bike running normally so I can ride it!

Noise

Where does the noise sound like is coming from? Have you put a stethoscope on it? What kind of noise does it make?

How about recording some video and putting that on line for us to hear?

We just need to hear whether it is making a tinkle, a rattle or a clonking noise.... :-)

Did you know it made these noises before you paid for it?

It's making a loud rattle noise. Hard to explain. I'll make a video. It sounds like it's coming directly from the engine block. The dealership did tell me it had engine noise, but they said they thought it might be normal for that engine. I can definitely tell it's not normal. Be right back with the video.

DW,

Honestly, I was expecting to hear something else from the way you explained things, perhaps I'm not picking up on the noise due to not being there.

If it were me, I'd check the gap on the valves and check the tension on the cam chain. Those two are easy to check and will make noise if not adjusted correctly.

Let us know what you find out.

Noise?

Daywalker, These motors are not real quiet, even in good shape. I can't hear anything on your video that sounds much different from other YouTube posts of Dreams - even with rebuilt motors.

It is hard to tell what frequencies your mic picks up well and that will change the sound of your video. You may want to check your valve lash just to be sure and check your timing chain adjustment. They seem to stand out a little, but I can't tell if it just your mic.

I am not saying there is nothing there. I just can't hear it in your video. I even listened on headphones. Check out other YouTube videos of Dreams to see what you think and maybe report back something for listen for.

I would defer to others who do hear something.
