you don't need a speedo to ride the bike, legal or otherwise. If you can't afford a dream speedo, then skip it. anything like what you are talking about will cost near the same and be pretty funky.

Working on Getting New Cables

Post by turtle racer » Mon Apr 29, 2013 7:43 am

I've sent the speedometer drive gear, along with my other CA77 cables to Motion Pro. They are going see if making a new speedometer cable will involve any major issues or cost.

I posted a write-up and pictures about my bike in the restoration folder.

Thanks again for the help and advice

Speedometer cable

Ebay 261207797392 is a new speedo cable for $65.00 and $3.60 shipping. Maybe that will give you a measure of how much to spend with Motion Pro.

custom cables for speedometer

Post by turtle racer » Mon May 27, 2013 7:23 pm

I received my cables back from Motion Pro. The custom speedometer cable cost $55 plus the cost of shipping the drive gear out to them to template and shipping my order back to me. The speedometer was around $50. Total build/work time was about 5-6 hours not including the wait time of drying filler and paint.
Motion Pro had no problem making the cables, they had the parts on hand.
I originally planned to mount the new speedometer in the same location of the old one, but as you can see I went in a different direction. It's easier to see/read and has a different look.
I ordered a cable sheath 34 inches, for the way I mounted the speedometer it should be an inch or two longer and maybe 1/2 to an inch shorter for mounting in the headlight bucket. Use this info only as a reference. If you order custom cables measure the lengths yourself.
Don't bother to ask me for a part or order number so you can order a similar cable. Motion Pro does not create a part or order number that is tied to the specification of a custom order, they do so many custom orders it would be too much for them to document each order. I know this because I ask. If anyone wants to do something similar start by visiting the Motion Pro or other cable shop web site and making a drawing of what you want.
To modify the headlight bucket I cut off the raised lip using a hand grinder and cutting wheel. I templated the hole to a piece of sheet metal which I MIG welded in place after ensuring a proper fit and drilling the hole for the cable to pass through. If I had mounted the speedometer in the bucket I would have cut that hole before welding also. I ground and sanded down the welds, added a little body filler, sanded the filler, and painted. I'm posting some full bike pictures in the project folder.

Generic Universal Speedometer Mouted in headlight Bucket

Post by turtle racer » Mon May 19, 2014 4:54 pm

A couple of weekends ago it was raining, so I decided to try mounting the generic universal speedometer I mounted to the handlebars into the headlight bucket. It took about an 1 1/2 hours.

I cut a undersized hole in the blank that I welded to the bucket, then slowly filed it the the correct size. I achieved a nice snug fit. I straighten the brackets I made to hold the speedometer to the handlebars and installed bolts to hold the speedometer in in place.

that's pretty sweet.

What I would REALLY like if I were to go the custom route would be one of those combo gauges with tach and speedo together, kind of nested. Like the one at the top of the Honda305 web site here. Those are uber cool IMO.
