Question - as the crank goes over TDC should there be resistance and that metallic "tink"? I assume that the noise will disappear after the head is torqued down?
Thank you, thank you!

As you turn the crank engine the cam lobes will contact the adjuster screws and do as you describe. . .................lm
I decided to replace the starter clutch gear because the galling on the sprague clutch surface bothered me. I don't want to have to take it apart again, and besides the clutch assembly itself is new. So, I bought an excellent used gear, which I've received, and I'm waiting on the crank seal that fits inside the gear. I also had to buy the two head top cover gaskets, because the old Rocky Cycles gasket set I have was missing those gaskets. I plan to assemble the head this week, and hopefully I'll do the starter clutch/rotor assembly as well.
I'm sending the starter motor to LM tomorrow, and he's going to perform his magic on it for me. He does wonderful work, and I can't say enough good about him! A fella whom I work with offered to disassemble the rear shocks for me. He returned them to me this morning, and they're in bad shape. He accidentally destroyed the plastic cover on one of them while taking it apart. Neither shock works very well - they're very rough over their stroke, and the rebound damping on both is almost non existent. It looks like I'll be hunting down shocks in due time. More money. Heavens! Of course, if the rear shocks are as bad as these are, the forks likely will be, too. Joy. I think I'll delay a tad before I find out just how bad. I've other things to do first! 1965 CB77 305 Super Hawk

Here's the mess. I've been digging around on the site a bit, and I found a terrific writeup by Graham (G-man) on rebuilding the shocks. Perhaps there is hope!

Did your 'friend' actually get the shocks apart? There are two (at least) types. One where you can dismantle the damper rod an done where you need to machine away a crimped top. I have done both but the ones that are threaded together are much easier to work on. I posted some pictures in this thread. http://www.honda305.com/forums/dissasem ... 94-14.html G '60 C77 '60 C72 '62 C72 Dream '63 CL72

Hi, Graham!
My friend (he's the base aircraft maintenance technician) got them to the state you see in the photo. I still have to remove the plastic pieces on the top of the shock bodies to see how the dampers actually go together. I'm hoping they're the crimped type, but somehow I don't think I'll be that lucky! The link you sent is the very one I was reading about refurbishing the shocks. My, do you do wonderful work! 1965 CB77 305 Super Hawk

Thanks for the kind words. If you poke away at the top of that plastic sleeve you may see a slot in the "nut" at the top. If so you are in luck. Your shock bodies look good and the lower covers look OK. If you can get them apart you can drain and refill them. I have some spare top covers if you cannot get one locally. I am in the US on 14th April and would gladly bring one with me and post it to you. PM me if you need any help. G '60 C77 '60 C72 '62 C72 Dream '63 CL72

Graham, you are so kind! I'll dig into those shocks tomorrow and then let you know what I find. Thank you!!! 1965 CB77 305 Super Hawk
