1968 305 dream Stator Test

Post by Ishirock » Mon Mar 25, 2013 9:22 am

Hi, I'm trying to determine if I have a bad stator. I have done the following tests and it looks like the primary side is open.

AC voltage test - yellow & brown = zero
pink & brown = 13 volts at idle, climbs as engine is revved

Resistance test - yellow & brown = open
pink and brown = 2 ohms

both tests were done to wires coming from engine unplugged from the rest of the harness.

Is this the best way to test and do I need to replace stator?

Will the system work with just the secondary side working if I plug the pink wire into the yellow going to the rectifier? Appears to not be producing enough voltage to keep battery charged, but I'm thinking of putting in the Radio Shack bridge rectifier to boost the voltage. thoughts?

where can I get a cheap stator? See them on Ebay, but afraid they may be bad also.

You should get AC voltage from the brown and yellow wires. They are 1/3 of the stator output. The brown and pink wires are the remaining 2/3 output from the stator that is used when the headlight is on. The 2 ohms you get from the pink and brown is about correct. You should get the same reading from the yellow and brown. Sounds like the two coils for the yellow wire are not functioning. You might remove the stator and take a look.

You could get charging voltage from the pink and brown but it would not be enough with the headlight on.
