What a concept - A Girl Bringing Back Her 1966 Super Hawk
The head arrived yesterday afternoon. It is simply like new! The cams are spotless, the lobes are shiny; the rockers look brand new; the bearings are all clean and shiny; the cam gear/advancer is clean; the tappet covers have the right finish on them; the combustion chambers, intake and exhaust ports and valves all look new. LM does gorgeous, meticulous work.
The next free day I have (Tuesday), I'll put the head on the engine. In the interim, I have more parts to clean, more to polish, and more to prep for paint. I still haven't picked up the oxalic acid, but at least I know where to get it, now. 1965 CB77 305 Super Hawk

More shiny bits!
I've carefully cleaned and polished the coil mounts in an effort to preserve the cadmium plating. I've succeeded. The cadmium looks like it has been polished off, but it has not been. It's tarnished, that's all. I cleaned, sanded and etch primed the coils, then shot them black. I did the same with the swingarm seals. The ignition lockset was cleaned. The horn mount bracket was cleaned. The starter covers were sanded, etch primed and painted. The horn is disassembled right now. The electrics work perfectly. I'm in the process of sanding the trumpet and the cover in preparation for paint.

A setback. I was prepping the engine for installation of the rotor and starter clutch so I could put the head on, and I found this crack:
When I pulled off the starter gear I found that the crankshaft seal tab was not in the slot on the top case, and therefore wasn't seated all the way. I don't know if that caused the crack, but i have to split the cases to find out what happened and then fix it (if I can). Oh, I am SO not happy right now....

The outer race of the bearing wasn't located on the knock pin properly and when you tightened the cases you pushed to pin OUT and pushed the case which has caused what you see,
You will need to split the cases and tap the knock pin back into the casting so you can JB Weld the part back in place. Make sure the ares is clean of oil and put the JB under the chip and place the chip then add JB to the outside. Ya Ain't the First!!!!!!!! Call if you need help. .. ..lm
That was exactly what jumped into my little brain when I saw that crack. I was SO careful to make sure all those knock pins where seated, too. That one got away from me. I know I'm not the first, but still, I am POed right now. Ed, thanks for the pep talk, I appreciate it - as always!

My CB77 motor was like that on both sides when I took it apart. JB weld should fix it as it is only holding the pins in place. I used Aluminum solder on mine. My case had many more serious issues than that. It's all in a day's fettling....... G '60 C77 '60 C72 '62 C72 Dream '63 CL72

I just pulled everything apart. The knock pin was only partially driven up, the bearing was seated on it properly. Apparently the bearing was slightly off and then centered itself on the knock pin when I started tightening the crankcase nuts. That was enough to punch a hole in the casting, though. The chip it made is still attached at the top of the casting, the pin didn't push it all the way off. I'm going to have to drive the pin either out through the chip, or try to push the chip back down. I think it might be a better idea to go ahead and break the chip all the way off so I can clean the area and get some JB Weld on it, and then get the knock pin back into place.
I'm glad I caught this now and not when the engine was 90% complete. Careful as I was, it still happened. Let this be a lesson!
