Thanks, 48- i can always count on you to chime in with something useful.

Bike looks amazing. I'm thinking I'd like to replicate that faded look a bit; the bright blue is a touch flashy for my tastes - which are admittedly pretty drab. I did just buy a red shirt- maybe I'm coming out of it a bit...
And the VHT paint- are you priming first or painting bare metal? Do you cure in the oven? Looks a good bet at $10 a can and solvent resistant. I'll paint the bike myself with a 4 stage HVLP system, but I'm all about a rattlecan for the side covers etc.

Graham, that bike looks like candy. I'm planning to do the same as you and paint al fresco (en plein aire?) Do you have pics of it assembled? Gorgeous bikes, all of you- thanks for your help.

The only pics of the bike assembled are before I disassembled it. :-)

It's a long haul and work keeps getting in the way. Paint is pretty much done but I need to get to the engine and wheels over the winter.

Amazing. Please tell me you're keeping those pressed steel bars - I didn't see them in the post-paint pic?

Good luck- I know how it is; I think about and research the bike projects endlessly but in actuality I get about 45 min wrenching time in a week! One of these days...

On the VHT paint, I just wet sand with 320-grit and paint. Usually 2-3 light coats then a wet one at the end all about 10 minutes apart. There's directions on the can, but I think you bake it for 1/2-hour at 200F. Now, you might ask, does it smell and can I do it in my kitchen oven? Well I've already taken that risk for the team, and there is no noticeable odor left in the oven. In fact, I reverse-complained that my side covers smelled like pot roast.

Thanks, 48. I'll order up a few cans and see what happens. If I have any smell complaints I'll claim I activated the self-cleaning feature.The missus will tolerate just about anything I'm stupid enough to do, but she's got a rather keen sense of smell and seems considerably less fond of the smells of fossil fuels than I am.

Yep - the pressed 'bars will stay. I have also had the aftermarket rear rack re-chromed and had the dealer transfer copied so I can re-apply that to the rear fender. I really want to get this bike as close to how it would have been when it was laid up in that damp shed around 35 years ago.

I also have a new set of brown, diamond pattern, handlebar grips to go on.

Madness creeps up on you, doesn't it?

G - I have to ask - were you at all tempted to just leave that one alone? I love that patina! It will be beautiful restored tho. Those tomato-red seats always seem to age very well due to the black seat covers used to hide them!
