Painted Aluminum CL 77 Rear Fender?

Post by carverbill » Sat Sep 29, 2012 10:46 am

I have owned a 66 CL77 for about a year now and have figured out what's needed to keep it original except one. The rear fender is aluminum and looks pretty good polished and buffed. The only unpainted rear fenders I have heard of were early 1961-1962 CL 72's. Parts manual calls out four versions of rear fender and mine would be 80100-273-6705. My ser# is 1039336. Are all the Aluminum fenders for CL 77's painted silver?

I may be wrong but I think that only CL72s had aluminum fenders....

Early ones were polished and lacquered and later (some time in 63) were painted.

CL77 Rear Fender

Post by cbxmountainman » Sat Sep 29, 2012 5:03 pm

I'm thinking along with G-Man on this. I have seen some dealer installed CHROME rear/front fenders, but most, if not all were painted. The CL-72s were pretty heavy and Honda tried the aluminum fender deal to lighten the load along with maybe an idea of a "competition" theme with the same front aluminum fender perhaps? JMHO

Thanks for the reply. I think the short aluminum rear fender was used on the CL 72's. I decided to keep it on the CL 77 since it is in better shape than the 4 sale items on eBay. After removing the fender to clean and prep for paint, I discovered traces of blue or metallic blue in spots on the underside. So this one was painted, possible silver then blue before it was striped and polished. It's back to Honda silver once again to match the front fender I just painted. I think it looks as close as I can remember this bike in 1966. Again thanks for your wisdom.
