Engine "tick"

Hey all,

I have noticed my cl77 has a ticking noise coming from the engine only under light acceleration, I don't hear it if it is idling or under hard acceleration. I don't hear it if I have the bike in neutral and rev it. Any ideas? Thanks in advance - Aron

I have the same tickety tick in mine. I think it's sloppy advance weights and will not be looking into it!

I had a similar noise and it turned out my cam chain guide roller had come loose.
Your noise may be a loose cam chain, try adjusting it using the cam chain tensioner on the back of the cylinder under the carbs.

A; try earplugs. you will be amazed at how much better these engines sound. A little tic is nothing to worry about.

Ear plugs Eh?

I personally think these engines are pretty quiet when in good running conditon.

I would start with valve clearance and chain adjustment.

Ultimately a teardown and inspection may be needed to correct the problem as others suggest the advancer as a common source for noise.

I actually took a ride without my helmet the other day and was shocked by all the new noises I could hear.

Thanks for the responses. Unfortunately I had already tried the valve clearance and cam chain adjustments. I don't know about the advance weights. As for the earplugs - I like to hear the bike, Just not extra noise. I have straight pipes with snuff or nots in them. The tick is just irritating. Its only noticeable under light load and can be heard when riding at road speed.

If you really want to be really shocked try listening to your engine with a stethoscope, Harbor Freight has a good cheap one with an extension probe.
With a little practice it can help narrow down where the various noises are coming from but remember, most of what you hear is normal 305 engine noise.
Probably goes without saying but take care not to overheat your engine.
