CB77 305 Sprung a Leak

I noticed yesterday my engine has started to leak oil from a number of spots on the right side. I bought it restored, rebuilt engine with only 400 miles on it, I've put only about 1000 miles on it myself. Seems a bit early for it to start dripping, or is that just how these bikes are? Seems unlikely.

Is there a particular nut behind the engine cover or something that tends to vibrate loose, causing a number of oil leaks like this, or did I just buy bike that wasn't restored as well as it could've been? Please tell me this isn't something only a tear-down is going to fix, I paid good money for a "turn-key" restoration.

I'd get a full seal kit and be ready to replace 'em all if necessary. 'Bout 4 of them in there. My Dream leaked from the same spot and most if not all the oil was coming through the starter sprocket seal. I replaced that seal and the crank seal and all is well again. Need a rotor pulling tool to get into the crank seal.

Ya, i think it is coming from in there. When I pulled the cover to change the clutch cable out, there was a bit of oil in there, I could tell it was leaking from somewhere. It's gotten worse.

Charlie's Place recommended I check the push-rod seal underneath the clutch cover, which is a good lead, since I recently replaced the clutch cable, and my figuring out how the mechanism worked resulted in a lot of jostling of the push-rod, I also took the rod out and put it back. So I'll check that.

Really stupid question -- you didn't recently lube the chain, did you?

haha, no, it's definitely not that. I can see lots of drips below the engine, so the leak is probably pretty bad. Does NOT seem normal for a rebuild with 1500 miles to need a new seal job.

stumbled upon Bill Silver's posts on the "Examiner" web site. Hey, I'm from San Diego too. Anyways, I see there's oil seals behind the kick-start cover and it's probably one of them, perhaps from extra pressure? or who knows. Guess I'll have to pull the cover off and see.

Hi,

Most people replace the seals when restoring, but forget about the surface of the shaft.
Within a few hundred miles the seal lips are in the same state as the replaced seals.

Or maybe a seal came out a bit, it happens sometimes, but mostly also because the preparation of the seal area wasn't good.

Who did the restoration ?
