2 questions please

Post by mdwman » Thu Apr 05, 2012 6:32 pm

Hi all,

I am new to the forum and have joined because I would like to purchase a Scrambler and want to learn about them. My questions are:

There is an ad in my area for a bike for sale listed as a 1964 Scrambler 305. Was the 305 available during this year? In the NADA guide I have been unable to find a CL77 for 1964, instead I see a CL72. Isn't the CL72 a smaller engine?

Also, what is the difference between a 1973 CL350K5 and a CL350K4 Scrambler? The NADA guide says an excellent example is valued at just $1500; does that sound right? There is a nice looking one for sale in my area but the seller wants twice that amount.

Thanks for your help. Looking forward to becoming part of the community!

2 questions?

MD, actually that is at least four questions ;) #1. No, CL-77s were released July 65. #2 Yes, the CL-72 is a 250( maybe that's what is for sale) #3. Mainly cosmetic #4. NADA figures just don't work on old Hondas, or anything old. Good luck, BTW where you from?....................D

Thanks guys for the replies.

Dgormley, great info. Maybe the guy does have a CL72 and just thinks it's a 305. I plan to speak to him and I'll see if that affects his asking price. I am in Nashville, TN.

rzgkane, that is a nice looking bike and it's on my watch list. Can you suggest any questions I should ask?

Thanks again!

Ask the seller for the frame and engine numbers. That will tell you a lot about what he's selling. Could be a CL77 and he's got the year wrong. I've seen more bikes with titles that state the wrong year than I can count.

Could also be a CL72 frame with a CL77 engine, aka a bitsa bike. Make sure both the frame and engine have the same model code in them. The serial numbers won't match and that is okay. But the model numbers should. They are all in what we call today the VIN.

regards,
Rob
