tuning recipe need help, suggestions and insight

Post by deez » Sun Jul 03, 2011 3:38 pm

well i just took my bike on a 850 mile ride and have been abusing this motor for the past 3 years when i suddenly started dropping a cylinder and losing power ( with a top speed of around 40mph ).
im in the garage and decided to start at the ed moore tuning recipe ( aka the bible! ) i have done this recipe tons of times now but this time when the light comes on at "F" its a dull light ( not lit up completely ) when on "LF" the bulb is lit up completely. can anyone tell me what this means? also any other suggestions to figure out the loss of power and cylinder? thanks in advance for any info.

My guess would be dirty, pitted, or out of adjustment points.

thanks for the response brewsky. i thought it was that as well sanded cleaned and air hose the points still dim on "F" then replaced with new points. still dim on "F" so im going to switch the coils around see if the dim goes to "LF" if anyone has any insight please let me know.

Next guess would be loose or corroded coil wire connection.

i just noticed why the light was brighter when at "LF". so when im at "LF" and the light is bright as can be i notice that i have a gap in between both left and right points. but when im at "F" the only gap in between points is on the right points. is this how its supposed to be? if anyone can shed some light on this it would be much appreciated.

Hi Deez,
Great to see you on the Melee!
I'd check your condenser. It's easy to swap the two condenser wires to the coils to test if one of the two has gone bad - creating a weak spark.

hello david. yeah man good times! yeah im gonna swap the condenser next. i was just curious on how the points were supposed to be since i have done the ed moore recipe a ton of times with no problems.
so i never noticed if both points were open at "F". is there a way to test with a meter if the condenser is bad? wish LM would chime in on this post. anyways till next time david. lets go ride once i get some time to get my bike up and running again.
-cheers
