Brew - I think what was happening was a combination of what Gordon Brown described in an earlier post, plus the fact that the washer was made of hardened steel. Here again, I'll get John to write it all down so that I can present a fuller (and more accurate!) picture of what occurred.

Got a bit more info about the NOVA washer -- part of it is still in there, and John would have had to pull the engine and split the cases to get it completely out (which understandably he was trying to avoid having to do!). What he did was to stick a vacuum in the backside of the washer, and from the outside he went in with a small grinder and made the washer hole bigger than the rod. Then he put the Honda bronze bushing in from the outside.

Just waiting on the seal from Applied Industrial Technologies here in Baltimore, and the bike should be ready to ride this weekend.

Got the bike back, and everything seems to be leak-free. I'll give it a good run this weekend, and hopefully it will remain leak-free!

Bike seems to be fixed now, though the carbs need a bit of adjustment. In 3rd gear at about 45mph the bike seems to be going 'bbbraaa-bbbraaa-bbraaa-bbbraaa', and I have to either slow down a bit or speed up a bit for the engine to smooth out at that point. John said that he adjusted the air mixture screw in, so maybe it might need to be pulled back out.

The newest project is the chain guard. Lee and I are determined to get this thing licked, and Lee is starting with a guard that he had sitting around (looks like it's half of an enclosed chain guard from some Honda or other). He's either going to use the swingarm on the bike, or use another one that I have. Hopefully he'll have something mocked up within a couple of days.

The project begins....

Vince at 45 in 3rd what is the throttle setting and do you get a similar situation in say 4th at a similar throttle setting?

It sounds like a the needle or cutaway is a little lean at that point. Is there a stretch of road that causes you to ride in 3rd at 45mph on steady throttle and if so have you tried it in second or 4th. Revs would be different and so would throttle opening.

Usually that sort of issue is throttle position dependent but we rarely sit at a constant throttle so it become a transient that we tend to ignore.

It may be both RPM and throttle position dependent but the only way to find out is to mark your throttle grip and see what the setting is at 45 in 3rd and repeat that throttle setting in another gear and note rpm as well.

That will help you to zero in, but it does sound like it's just off idle and that means it's probably slow speed jetting or the cutaway.

Chain guard is done! I will try to post a few photos of it soon. The guard is now all rubber mounted, it has an extra mounting point ahead of the shock, and the front outside mount has been enlarged to about 2" in length. I think (and hope!) I now have a nuclear-proof chain guard.

Lee adjusted the carbs while he had the bike, and now it runs much better -- he turned the air screws out and adjusted the idle screws and it cleared right up. Life is good.
