40 year basement bike

Post by linmictil » Sun May 08, 2011 4:30 pm

Hello Gents: Well-- I am finally retired and the kids are gone. My "66" Scrambler has been sitting in my basement for over 40 years. I did a lot of clean-up work on it 5 years ago when I blew my back out. Went back to work and it sat again. I got it out today with help. I tried to kick it over and she is hung up. I put oil in through the plug holes many years ago but never cranked it over for a long time. Question is: Would it just be the pistons froze or something else ?( ex: crank, cam etc.) Anything to help break it loose without dissembling? WD-40-kerosene? Probably more questios down the line before I get it running again...Thanks Mike[/b]

I started using WD-40 but apparently PB Blaster is better.. It is WD-40 on steroids. I am now using it to attempt to loosen up two 305 CL77 motors.

That's all I know. Stick with this board and you will learn so much. My '66 is just now seeing the light of day since 1974.

Don't use the kick starter to free it up. You'll run a good chance of damaging the starter. I have a spare engine that had damage due to trying to free it with the kicker.

Yah I will be breaking one free somewhat soon if all goes well. Penetrating oil through the spark plug hole and either in 4 gear with it on the main stand break it free or remove the cover and use the 14mm bolt on the flywheel. Stay away from the kick starter.

Maybe Maybe I put it in gear and got a bit of a turn on the back wheel/ Added another quart of oil to the crankcase . Thought maybe a higher oil level might help also???? Took the carbs off and sprayed a little "Blaster" in there. Thanks for the help gents . Let you know what happens

Well I took off the dynamo and the rotor. Put a harden 3/4 in. bolt in the end of the crank and reefed on it with a breaker bar. No movement at all. I currently have the motor disconnected and ready to come out. DAMNIT!!!! OH well--- Sons coming over tomorrow, maybe we can get it out. He has a stronger back than me... Can't wait to open it and see whats inside..(rust:( It's Southern Comfort time here at Mike house.. Cheers!

Mike, remove the two studs from the head for the left exhaust. A lot fewer scrapes on the frame that way. Remove the engine from the right side of the bike.
