shock disassembly

Post by jleewebb » Sun Apr 24, 2011 12:37 pm

here's how I got my old shocks apart, may give you some ideas. Somebody said they used a Work-Mate bench to do the same thing, others have done it with a variety of other tools and techniques. I used a lot more padding and care to get the new ones back together. good luck, Lee

Things are progressing slowly. Too many spring reno projects on the go. I have to sneak out to the garage and get a few hours work on the bike here and there. The heads and cylinders are at the shop getting the new valves installed and bored out for the new pistons( 4th over). I want to X the transmission before I put it back together. What is the easiest way to go about that? I also have a set of offset cotters to tune up second gear. How do you get the retainer clip off to release the cotter?
Anyways, the fenders and side panels should be getting back from the painters soon, and I will have the gas tank and frame ready for paint as well. I had the cylinders and transmission cases soda blasted to clean them up. I was hoping to leave them bare, but the aluminum was stained in spots, so I painted them with VHT flat aluminum. Looks good!
I have started polishing up some of the aluminum when I have nothing else I can do and it is coming out pretty nice. The more I get done, the more impatient I am getting.
I will try to get some pics of the reassembly when I start.

It is a1966. .............lm
Question:

The last 65-67 CB77 was 1056432 ... if they made 56,432 for the 3 years of production (65, 66, 67), that makes 18,811 per year (average), which means the 1967 run would have been frame numbers:

1037621-1056432 (+/- a few k)

Which means my bike (1049727) is also a 1967 unlike my previous thoughts that it was a 1966.

Did I miss something?

Dana, I have 1049722 in the Model Year Database as a '66 reg'd, so yours is more likely to be a '66.

The first definitive '67 I have is 1053051, although, as yet, I have no 66-67 transition number. Still awaiting later '66 and earlier '67 numbers for the analysis.

Hi E3,

So sorry ... the 1049722 is mine. My engine is 1049727. I'll amend the post above. My production date is still inconclusive.

My bike has:
1969 - original NC DMV reg. with date of sale and orig. owner
1969 - 1975 registration card
1966 - harness tag
1967 - e-mail from Mr. Silver

I have a call in to the original store which is still in business. The original salesman (deceased) was the father of the present owner :) He's digging through the attic for me to see if he can find any original paperwork. I also have a call in to the NC DMV to track down other data and/or owners.

So my error is the assumption that production went evenly over 36 months. But if the first verified 1967 was 1053051 (+/-), the remaining production over 65-66 was about 26,525 per year (assuming 12 months production in each of the two years). That gives

1965: 0000001 - 1026525 (26,525)
1966: 1026525 - 1053050 (26,526)
1967: 1053051 - 1056432 (3,381)

This assumes production started 1/1/65 went evenly throughout the run, and ended 12/30/67. Do you have any dates of production start or end? I can't find my resto. book ... I think I left it at the DMV .. lol

Sorry for rambling ... this thread should probably go elsewhere, but I'm getting fascinated.

I thought 722 was spookily close to 727!

I'd say that the harness makes the loudest noise....

Finally got almost all my pieces. Enough to get started putting everything back together. I bored the cylinders and put in new pistons and rings, new valves, all new seals, replaced any bearings that needed it, shimmed the tranny, rebuilt the carbs, new points, cam chain and roller, all new sprockets and chain, new tubes and tires, wheel bearings, cables, new repro mufflers, and everything that can be painted or polished has been. The pictures are off a little colorwise, as I din't have the white balance set properly. The red is a fire engine red, but it looks a little orangey under the flourescent lights. I'm just waiting until I can get a hand to install the engine. The last thing I want to do is drop it at this point!
