Another newbie starts a resto!Another newbie starts a resto!Well I finally have my superhawk and am ready to get started tearing her down. I have ordered the Bill Silvers manuals and a Honda service manual as well. My frame/engine numbers are
CB77 1044648 and CB77E 1044673. Does anyone know the actual year of this bike? I was told it was a '64. The motor isn't seized as I am able to turn it over with the kick start, although when I push it while in 4th gear there seems to be a clunk in the tranny somewhere:( Pretty well everything is there except the chain guard and tank badges. I have enjoyed this forum so far and will surely be asking lots of questions. Away we go!!

Good news about finding a free-moving motor; the gearbox clunking could possibly be the dogs binding as they pass each other, indicating the need for tranny shimming & cotters re-sizing. Try the same pushing action whilst acutely leaning the bike to each side -- observe whether or not there's a change in the sound. Whichever way you look at it, I'd say the motor needs pulling apart. rrhbyrne@aol.com for the tank emblems; watch eBay for a chainguard. A bunch of these CB's appearing lately. Mine is exactly the same. Funny thing is my 4th gear was missing a tooth and I had to tear into the tranny. Glad I did though. Learned a ton. Enjoy!! Dana

I love these internet forums. I have rebuilt a '71 CT90 and two mid '70s John Deere snowmobiles, and the expertise and advise I've recieved from people is amazing. It seems that no matter what problem you might run into, someone else has run into it first and has a solution! I have one question right off the top. I have read about people X-ing the tranny gears. What does that do?
It closes the ratio chasm between 1st & 2nd, moving it up to between 3rd & 4th. It all depends upon your riding habits/environments as to whether or not you'd benefit. Low-speed traffic would dictate 'yes', whereas higher-speed overtaking would mean 'leave it as-is'. Getting started!Finally got some time to get out in the shed. Don't have my manuals yet but started tearing stuff off. Everything looks in decent condition except the mufflers. I think the tranny will need some TLC as well. A total teardown is coming up!
