Steve, Good to hear from you. If there is anything I miss, don't make clear or incorrectly state please chime in. I am working sporadically on the bike. I am looking at my gears right now and will shoot over pics for Ed to look at. There is a little rounding of the dogs, I'm hoping not enough to warrant replacement. The gears on e-bay and other places are $100-$150. I can't see paying those prices. If the gears are good then I'll be posting the Xing gears procedure.

Cheers- HT

I intend X-ing mine, also. I badly need to shim my layshaft; there's about 2-3mm of endfloat! Any ideas as to where to find the hardened shim washers? I have plenty of (various thickness) offset cotters, but there's not a shim in sight.

I have some parts that are in a less than desirable condition, but I'm lucky enough to have a complete spare trans (also minus the shims) so I can mix-n-match without too much drama.

I also have some spare clutches if anyone needs any parts (no wire retainers, though), and a couple of good primary chains going spare (open to offers), one of which is an OEM D.I.D..

Looking forward to your next installment!

For tuning up the trans endplay, I've had good results by going to a shop that specializes (sorry Steve: specialises) in automotive transmissions, and sorting through their thrust shim selections. Usually lots of good pieces there. One hint: be sure to mount the clutch basket and retaining circlip on the input shaft before calculating what needs to be adjusted. Regards, Chase

Many thanks for the info, Chase. Armed with that I'll see what I can find locally.

Now it is time to look at Xing the gears. I put the main shaft and counter shaft down as in the parts manual so I could count teeth and make sure that I either had the stock arrangement or see if the trans had been previously X'd. I slid everything off and kept the gears in order. I counted teeth ansd sure enough I had the stock setup, 27T 2nd gear counter shaft- 23T 3rd gear counter shaft, 24T 2nd gear main shaft- 29T 3rd gear main shaft.

I don't know how to do the photo shop tricks, so I used tape to show the X'ng. The deal is you're switching places with the 29T 3rd gear main shaft with the 27T 2nd gear counter shaft and switching places with the 24T 2nd gear main shaft with the 23T 3rd gear counter shaft.

Slide your set ring down the counter shaft and put your cotters in. Slide your 24T 2nd gear down and slip the set ring on and you're golden.
