just got an answer"That figure is the "installed height" of the valve spring. To determine that distance you put one valve at a time in it's position in the head, intsatll the spring seat, the retainer and the keepers. Pull up and hold the valve closed by the the retainer, and measure the distance between the inside of the spring seat (where the spring actually sits) and the underside of the retainer (also where the spring actually makes contact with the retainer). That distance should fall within the 1.380" to 1.420" range. Some builders like to use just the inner spring to help hold the assembly in place while taking this measurement. The enclosed shims are to correct this dimension as required."

steering dampersHello
Hillhudson, if you reverse? your front engine hanger bolt ( head to L/H, thread on R/H ) you can make up or have made a double ended nut 10mm - 8mm about 40mm long ( a curved tube with 10 / 8 mm nuts welded in the ends works even better ) You can use the cheaper "Kawasaki type" adjustable ones and use the original 8mm hole in the bottom yoke ( triple tree in US ). I think these look quite period and seem to work OK . I am sure you can find a local source for them. I hope this all makes sense. Gordon SAFOJ
